Expedition ratings

Please read this carefully as your enjoyment (and everybody else’s on the Expedition) depends on you having the appropriate level of fitness.  If there is any doubt or questions about your participation on any particular expedition, please contact us at info@strannikoceanvoyages.com.

We categorise or grade our voyages and expeditions under the following headings. Please make sure you familiarise yourself with these requirements when considering your participation in a particular voyage/expedition as your enjoyment, the enjoyment of others and the success of the expedition depends on it.

We deliberately do not publish a day by day intenerary for any of our expeditions\voyages because we believe once an itenrerary is published it ceases to be an expedition and potentially compromises or limits the outcome and results of the Expeditions. Instead each of our expeditions have clearly stated goals and objectives and you as a member of the expedition team will, under the leadership of the Expedition Leader, play a key role in deciding just how, when and where those objectives are best achieved. We hope that our stated goals and objectives will be shared by all team members and as a result each expedition will be a unique and rewarding travel experience.

The Kuril Islands

03 Jun 2019 - 17 Jun 2019

Stretching like a string of pearls from the Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia  in the north to  Hokkaido, Japan in the south, the Kuril Islands are in our opinion more precious than pearls. Erupted up out of the ocean depths as the Pacific tectonic plate collided with the Eurasian plate, these islands are born of fire. They are a living example of ...

The Commander Islands

20 Jun 2019 - 04 Jul 2019

There are many very special places on our planet, but Commander Islands stands head and shoulders above “the many”. If you have been there you will want to go again (and again). If you haven’t been there you should.  The history, landscapes and abundance of wildlife are overwhelming.  These Islands are home for thousands of seabirds, which breed there during ...

The Russian Far East Coast

06 Jul 2019 - 22 Jul 2019

Look at a map of the North Pacific and you will see that western sector is dominated by Russia. It is arguably one of the lesser known coastlines of anywhere in the world. Look closer and you will see (if you map is of good quality) there are very few settlements marked among the numerous bays, inlets, and fiords as ...

Islands and People of the Bering Sea

25 Jul 2019 - 07 Aug 2019

Your view and understanding of the Bering Sea is probably distorted by the imagery and stories you have seen on “The World’s Deadliest Catch” or perhaps “Bering Sea Gold”.   But beyond these stories which are embellished for these reality TV shows, there are other more incredible true stories. It is a story of a land bridge connecting two great ...

The New Siberian Islands

12 Aug 2019 - 12 Sep 2019

In 2017 I led an expedition that completed the first double transit of the NE Passage or Northern Sea Route by an expedition ship.  Both expeditions were incredibly successful in more ways than we could have imagined. But it left me dissatisfied wanting more, I simple can’t get enough of the high  Arctic.  I am drawn to it, I have ...
